WWU/UW Omnium

31 03 2008

The drive from Corvallis to Eugene was a little stressful because we were a little late. We got there in plenty of time, though… van loading hadn’t really started. The 8 hour drive to Bellingham was okay. T-Man (Takuya) drove fantastically, and the minivan crew got along fine. Kennett provided plenty of bad smells.

I’m used to driving from Corvallis to Seattle, because that’s where my mom’s family is from. Starting an hour further south and going an hour plus further north made the time in the car feel long. We got into our host housing at 9ish on Friday night, screwed around a little, and went to bed.

Everyone’s cellphone went off at 6:00am on Saturday. It was ridiculous. We got up, met the other half of the caravan, and drove out to the TTT course. It was snowing. It’d been snowing last night. As we got closer to the course, it was snowing harder. Finally Adam gets a call canceling the TTT. Not cool… how many times do you get to do a TTT in the snow?

We had a few hours to kill before the road race, so we hung out at the Horseshoe in Bellingham and ate breakfast again. We saw Greg (PSU/Ironclad) there. We drove out to the road race course and chatted with Bill. It was snowing, the roads were definitely not race-able. Everyone went inside the fire-house that was acting as the official’s area and watched some WWU guy ride his rollers for ten minutes. Around 10am, they cancelled the road race.

ARG. Eight hours of driving and no racing!

We drove down to Seattle, unloaded all the stuff with our host housing guy, and went for a ride in the sun. (.. which is weird, considering we cancelled the events in Bellingham for snow.) We ate some food, looked at power data, blabity blah. I set a new 5s power – 1213w.

The crit on Sunday was out at Seward Park. It was fast, I sucked at the back, I couldn’t get through at the finish (because I didn’t/couldn’t get up there), ugh. I had a fan section of about two dozen (cousins, aunts, uncles from Seattle). Whee.

Minutes after the race, I was looking up my average speed and pushed both buttons for whatever reason. Decreased oxygen to the brain, probably. I see it say -clr- so I freak out and take my hands off the buttons, which actually does clear it. If you have a powertap, you know what I mean. I don’t think I set any new records, but there were definitely +500w peaks twice a lap. We were rocking over 600w up that little hill sometimes (I think. I glanced at my powertap every once in a while).

I got 17th (of 32), and slipped over all to 16th.

The drive back was fun in The Home (the old people van). Dave, Lisa and I watched the last stage of the Tour of California on my laptop. We listened to Peter’s commentary on racing, race radio, time trial champions.

I got home and went to bed. 16 hours of driving, probably, for a 45-minute crit. That’s how it is, oh well. It was fun. Pictures soon to come.

APPEND:

Today’s been a nice off day. I have a hard training week, and the PSU events should be good training. I have 240 race miles so far.

This week: two easy days, three hard days, two race days. I expect a high-score on my TSS for the week.

I’ve made the questionable decision to add Mr. Peterson to my blogroll.
