Stop signs

17 11 2008

One of my friends just got a $242 ticket for slowly rolling through a stop sign on her bike at 15th and Agate. The motorcycle police pulled over two other girls right after her. I’m all for safety, don’t get me wrong. Blowing stop signs is dangerous and gives cyclists a bad reputation, but I that is too much. The Oregonian ran an article about a similar police stop-sign sting in Portland, but they gave warnings instead of handing out fines. Hmm.

It’s a well known fact that Eugene Police are a bunch of douche bags…

Damn cyclists think they own the road. They don’t pay taxes. They have no right to use our roads. Damn commie socialist European wanna-bes. They’re just un-American, that’s all there is to it. I agree, that girl shouldn’t have gotten a ticket. She should have been thrown in jail and haled off to a work camp to manufacture Hummer parts.

technically, she should have stopped. and the police should also enforce the laws evenly – bikes are legally vehicles and subject to the same enforcement as cars. if there’s a bias, that’s the real killer.

also, the nutter fixers on campus busting through red lights at night and the like probably have the cops more on the lookout for bikes than anything else. i suggest removing air from all brake-less fixed gears on campus as a means of restoring the reputation of the cycling community in the city at large.

blowing through a stop sign on a bike isnt the same as rolling through one on a 2000 pound deadly vehicle. Bikes also have a much wider field of view. THe law should be like Idaho, where stop signs are yields for bikes, and stoplights are like stop signs.
